Renault 18 - Рено 18

The Renault 18 is a large family car produced by French manufacturer Renault between 1978 and 1993 (with production for European markets finishing in 1989).

Development

The Renault 18 was intended as a replacement for the Renault 12, which, having been in production since 1969, was beginning to show its age by the late 1970s, though the 12 was kept in production alongside the 18 until 1980. Unlike the earlier car, the 18 was designed rather quickly; the time between its initial conception and its actual launch date was only eighteen months, primarily due to the fact that the 18 was based upon the 12's underpinnings. Although Renault made numerous forays into international markets in countries such as Brazil with the 12, their first true “world car” was their 18, hence the slogan Meeting International Requirements, which (as well as in France) would later be produced in nine other countries and four continents around the world.

DCT - Clio RS

Automated: The next-generation Renault Clio Sport will be available exclusively with a dual-clutch transmission, unlike the current model (pictured).
No manual gearbox or three-door bodystyle for next-generation Renaultsport Clio RS

By BYRON MATHIOUDAKIS in Paris NEXT year’s Renaultsport Clio will come only with an automated transmission rather than a manual when it arrives in Australia a little while after the rest of the Clio range in 2013.

And Renault will discard the three-door bodystyle across the whole Clio range, in favour of a five-door variant with hidden doorhandles like contemporary Alfa Romeo hatchbacks such as the Mito and Giulietta, and the recently unveiled Renault Zoe electric car.

The Renaultsport version of the X98-series Clio light car will drive its front wheels exclusively via a dual-clutch transmission (DCT), spelling the end of the six-speed manual that has served the Clio RS since the existing X85-generation debuted Down Under in 2007.

This will herald a very different sort of hot hatch, losing some raw edge in the pursuit of increased refinement and lower emissions, a Renaultsport insider told GoAuto.

However, the Megane RS will remain a more traditional Golf GTI rival as a manual-only proposition until at least 2016, with no plans yet to adopt the DCT technology beyond that.

“The next Clio RS will be 100 per cent dual-clutch,” our source revealed.
Left: Renault Zoe.

“But (the Megane RS265) is for people like us – the old-school type. I would say it is for the politically incorrect people. There will be no dual-clutch for now.

“And we will try to keep this car (with the manual transmission) as long as we can.

“Currently, in the Renault secret long-term planning, we have it for another four years from now, so we can guarantee you some very traditional and politically incorrect pleasures for another four years. After that, I have no idea what will happen.

“My philosophy is to enjoy (the RS265) as much as you can for as long as you can.”

The Clio’s DCT transmission is expected to be a variation of the Getrag-supplied six-speed dual-dry-clutch gearbox that debuted internationally in the Megane in 2010.

It is already an open secret that the Clio RS’s long-serving 147kW/215Nm 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol powerplant is on its way out, to be replaced by a smaller-capacity turbocharged unit of about 1.6 litres in capacity.

Our company source admitted the decision to switch to DCT and five doors in the next Clio RS was made not only in the interest of meeting increasingly stringent fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions requirements, but also to greatly extend the series’ appeal to women, younger people and car enthusiasts with small families needing five-door practicality.

“For us we have to deal with that,” our source explained.

“The future of the hot hatch business is going towards engines that are smaller, cars that are lighter, and we want to seduce new customers that we are not seducing now.

“We joke that we want to seduce the young lady from Paris who drives a Mini or Fiat 500 Abarth. We do need to appeal to these types of customers (with) the new Clio RS with the new philosophy.”

The result is that the hottest Clio will vie for the attention of Volkswagen Polo GTI, Alfa Romeo Mito and Audi A1 Sportback buyers, as well as Mini Cooper and Citroen DS3.

The changes mark the end of the big-engine/small-car era for cars in the B-segment – ironically a class that Renault helped pioneer with the early R5 Turbo in 1980 and carried through with the Clio Williams of the 1990s.

The DCT will be the first non-manual transmission offered on an RS product in Australia.

Although the fourth-generation Clio will be produced in Turkey alongside the Australian-bound Megane and Fluence, the RS will come from Dieppe in France.

Renault will showcase the X98 Clio range at the Paris motor show in late September. - goauto.com.au -

Renault 5 Is Car

21. Renault 5: (1972-1996) - 8,800,000

The Renault 5 (also called the R5) is a supermini produced by French automaker Renault in two generations between 1972-96 and sold in the US as Le Car, from 1976 to 1986.

The Renault 5 was first unveiled on 10 December 1971, being launched at the beginning of 1972

The Renault 5 was styled by Michel Boué, who died before the car's release, the R5 featured a steeply sloping rear hatchback and front dashboard. Boué had wanted the taillights to go all the way up from the bumper into the C-pillar, in the fashion of the much later Fiat Punto and Volvo 850 Estate / Wagon, but the lights remained at a more conventional level. The 5 narrowly missed out on the 1973 European Car of the Year award, which was instead given to the Audi 80.

The R5 borrowed mechanicals from the Renault 4, using a longitudinally-mounted engine driving the front wheels with torsion bar suspension. OHV engines were borrowed from the Renault 4, Renault 8, and Renault 16, and ranged from 850 to 1400 cc. Early R5s used a dashboard-mounted gearshift (the gearbox is in front of the engine)—later replaced with a floor mounted shifter. Door handles were formed by a cut-out in the door panel and B-pillar. The R5 was one of the first cars produced with a plastic bumper bar—or fascia—that has become an industry standard. This car has introduce a small invisible revolution. It was the first one with a front and a rear bumper in plastic (polyester and glass fibre). Nowaday, 99% of the manucfactured cars in the world have plastic bum

Renault 5 Alpine - Gordini Renault 5
Alpine The Renault 5 Alpine was one of the first hot-hatches, launched in 1976. Its launch pre-dated that of the Volkswagen Golf GTI. In the UK, the car was sold as the Renault 5 Gordini because Sunbeam already had the rights to the name "Alpine" and was used on the Talbot Alpine at the time. Use of the name Gordini was from Amédée Gordini, who was a French tuner with strong links with Renault and previous sporting models such as the Renault 8. The 1.4 L (1397 cc) OHV engine, mated to a five-speed gearbox, was based on the Renault "Sierra" pushrod engine, but having hemispherical combustion chambers and featured a crossflow cylinder head and developed 93 PS (68 kW; 92 hp), twice as much as a standard 1.1 L (1108 cc) Renault 5. The Alpine could be identified by special alloy wheels and front fog lights and was equipped with stiffened suspension, but still retaining the torsion bar all round. The UK car magazine Motor road test figures quoted top speed of 104.7 mph (168.5 km/h) and 0-60 mph in 9.7 seconds.per.

Renault 5 Alpine Turbo - Gordini Turbo

The Renault 5 Alpine Turbo was launched in 1982 as an upgraded successor to the naturally aspirated Alpine. In Britain, the car was still called Gordini rather than Alpine. Motor magazine undertook a road test of the Turbo in 1982 and while they appreciated the performance (top speed 111.8 mph (179.9 km/h), 0-60 mph 8.7 seconds), they were critical of its high price as it was £2 more than the larger Ford Escort XR3

The 1.4 L (1397 cc) was the same as the Alpine, but with the addition of a (single Garrett T3 turbocharger) increasing the power output to 110 bhp (82 kW; 112 PS).

Sales continued until 1984 when the second generation Renault 5 was launched, and the release of the Renault 5 GT Turbo in 1985.

About Renault

The Renault corporation was founded in 1899 as Société Renault Frères by Louis Renault and his brothers Marcel and Fernand. Louis was a bright, aspiring young engineer who had already designed and built several models before teaming up with his brothers, who had honed their business skills working for their father's textiles firm. While Louis handled design and production, Marcel and Fernand handled company management.

The first Renault car, the Renault Voiturette 1CV was sold to a friend of Louis' father after giving him a test ride on 24 December 1898. The client was so impressed with the way the tiny car ran and how it climbed the streets that he bought it.

The brothers recognised the publicity that could be obtained for their vehicles by participation in motor racing and Renault made itself known through achieving instant success in the first city-to-city races held in Switzerland resulting in rapid expansion for the company. Both Louis and Marcel Renault raced company vehicles, but Marcel was killed in an accident during the 1903 Paris-Madrid race. Although Louis Renault never raced again, his company remained very involved, including Ferenc Szisz winning the first Grand Prix motor racing event in a Renault AK 90CV in 1906. Louis was to take full control of the company as the only remaining brother in 1906 when Fernand retired for health reasons.
